(October 29, 2012) - Code 3 Associates, a Longmont, Colorado based technical animal rescue response unit deployed BART (Big Animal Rescue Truck), their 82 foot tractor trailer, to the east coast this morning. The decision to mobilize BART was made after conferring with our National Animal Rescue and Sheltering Coalition (NARSC) partners along with other state and federal agencies during a conference call on Sunday evening. Code 3 and other NARSC partners are mobilizing their resources to pre-stage, allowing for a quick and effective response to those areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy requesting assistance for their human/animal needs.

BART is equipped with land and water operations rescue equipment, is en route to Kansas City with one team of technical rescue operators where they will meet up with two other Code 3 teams prior to continuing to the east coast. Code 3 rescue operators are trained and certified to human standards in swift water rescue, high angle rope rescue, and animal handling both large and small including exotics. Bart carries several boats and motors, safety gear for team operators, a pickup truck and stock trailer, and temporary sheltering equipment. BART is equipped to sustain a response team of up to ten people for up to two weeks in a zero resource environment. Code 3’s mission in the effort is being coordinated through NARSC and will be both land and water based rescue and recovery. Other NARSC members will also be either part of this mission or providing sheltering for animals displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

Code 3 will also be supported in the effort through their partnership with the Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart Foundations and Stewart Haas Racing in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
