(Statesville, NC – August 20, 2012) – Ryan Newman isn’t expecting anything to be out of the ordinary as he battles for his third-straight win in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 22, 2012.
The Wednesday afternoon event will be the first for Newman at the 1.058-mile oval since track owner Bruton Smith made surface changes following the spring race in hopes of giving fans a better, more exciting experience. The Sprint Cup regular will be making his second series start of the season and when asked, doesn’t anticipate any changes when the checkered flag falls.
“I am not 100% sure, but I don’t think we’ll see any noticeable changes in the modified race,” said Newman who is looking forward to placing another trophy on his shelf. “I may be wrong, but we never run high at Bristol in the modified cars like we do in the cup cars, so I really don’t foresee any drastic changes. Plus, the tires on the modified cars are significantly different than what we run on the cup cars. It’s a tough question to answer without having any seat time. We’ll just have to wait until practice and see what we’re working with and make changes accordingly.”
For this race only, Newman will display a new number on the car. He will be in the No. 77 Chevy sponsored by Aggressive Hydraulics and Menards owned by Marcy Putman. Native northerners Gary Putman and Kevin “Bono” Manion will be on top the pit box calling the shots as Newman battles for the win.
“Expect even with the track changes for it to be business as usual with the way the modified car reacts to the track. We’re going for three in a row and we’ll do whatever we need to in order to get to victory lane. The new surface should build a lot of excitement for the modified race and hopefully draw a big crowd to the stands.”
Before Ryan straps in for the race, fans will have a chance to get his autograph. He will be participating in the series driver’s autograph session from 1:45pm – 2:15pm located at Gate 14 under the Darrell Waltrip grandstand.
The race will be on air on the SPEED Channel starting at 6:00pm EST and Newman will be carrying an in-car camera to catch all the action.
The Ryan Newman Foundation will once again give away items to 25 fans. If Ryan wins the modified race, the first 25 people to send an email with their name, tee shirt size and mailing address to info@ryannewmanfoundation.org will win a shirt.
