AFTER BUDDY DUTY, WAR DOGS GET CHANCE AT TRUE FREEDOM

In the midst of war, a soldier hears a nearby whimper. They pause for a moment, and see an injured, malnourished dog. However, the animal has hope in its eyes. These dogs are a reminder of the soldiers’ childhood best friends, as well as their loved ones back home. As the soldier bends down and scoops the dog up, two lives are saved. At this moment, amongst all the chaos and destruction, a bond is formed.

11 dogs were born as strays. They were saved from a life of starvation, torture, abuse, and possibly death. Americans and US soldiers in the worn torn Afghanistan gave these 11 dogs a chance at life. The dogs were saved again, and now get a chance at true freedom.

Guardians of Rescue, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to assist and foster programs and activities that promote the many benefits of interaction between people and animals, has accomplished the first part of their mission. Through generous donations from the Ryan Newman Foundation, Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation, and their supporters, Guardians of Rescue met their goal to get 11 dogs from Afghanistan to the United States.

The Nowzad Shelter in Afghanistan was forced to evacuate their location. They are currently in a temporary location, and are desperately trying to raise money to build a new shelter for the dogs. If they do not succeed, their dream to make a difference for the dogs and humans alike would be over. By sending these 11 dogs to the United States, they will be able to focus on what they started out to do.

Through the partnership with Nowzad, Soldiers’ Animal Companions Fund, Hounds Town – Port Jefferson, Ryan Newman Foundation, Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation, and Pilots-n-Paws, Guardians of Rescue is proud to announce the first part of their mission is complete.

Momentarily, the 11 dogs will be transported to the United States. One lucky dog will be sent to her Soldier in Colorado, and the other 10 dogs will be safely kept in the loving hands of Hounds Town – Port Jefferson. While there, the dogs will be put through a training program designed to help them get acclimated to a life in the U.S., and ready to join the lives of their new owners.

During this time, Guardians of Rescue and the Soldiers’ Animal Companions Fund will match these dogs with adoptive homes, and Pilots-n-Paws will work on transport. However, while waiting for their new homes, funds will need to continuously be raised for their care. Donations can be made by visiting their website, www.guardiansofrescue.org

Together we save them, one life at a time.
